Just love 'em!
What I did was make a little swatch with the yarn I wanted to use, then I got out my trusty Ann Budd book, The Knitter's Handy Book Of Patterns, looked up my gauge and casted on the number that they recommend for the size hat I wanted. If you don't have this book I recommend it, it's IS very Handy!

These are too cute! Love the colors in the first one! You know that I haven't made it over to the knit shop for a class! It's bordering ridiculous. My twelve year old taught herself (when she was eight)... she thinks I'm a major moron.
That book should be a requirement. Love them both but especially that chunky white hat. There is something about that chunky yarn on a small scale that looks so good. Hope you are well.
