FO: Owl Puffs

Ever since I saw THIS version of these cute Owl Puffs I've wanted to make one and I'm glad I finally did. This was a fun little 1.5 evening project with WZ. He had fun sitting next to me watching me knit and create this as we cuddled on the couch in the evenings watching Christmas cartoons. This lil' owl affectionately named "Smorf" was made just for WZ to hang on the tree and play with. I do see more in the future though… I think these would make great toppers for gifts all year long!

Today I've been winding down with work for the Holidays and won't be back to post until a bit later. I wanted to wish you all a very, Merry Christmas (or, if you prefer, a very, Happy Holiday!). I so very much appreciate you and all your support as I grow my Knitterella and Jill Zielinski Designs businesses. It has been a great year of many new and exciting things and God willing, I'm looking forward to many more in 2013. Thank you for everything and the best to you and yours for healthy and happy 2013!

 Cheers!

Knitterella and GLBM on TV

I'm very happy to report that I survived my first experience with LIVE TV! I got up at 3 AM yesterday morning and, along with Liberty from Great Lakes Bay Moms, we made the trip to Clio, MI to be ready for our 2, 2 minute-ish live segments with Brittany Shannon of my local TV25 morning news.

(Liberty and I)

I was SO thankful to make it through with no major screw ups. Really, I was pretty darn nervous! A huge thanks to everyone on set and to Liberty for making me feel welcomed and relaxed. It was a lot of fun!

(Close up shot. LOVE that head form that Liberty brought for me - I want one!)

The below picture is a photo of me on set. The segment was about bundling up yourself and your kids for the cold weather. A more detailed article from GLBM can be found HERE. In the segment I explained that the patterns on my left were my original Knitterella pattern designs and since I have yet to add children's patterns to my line, the hats on the right of me were made from FREE patterns found online. A list and links to each sample knit that I had on set can be found HERE.

(Happy to here)

I'm hoping that a video of the segment will get posted online and when/if it does I will for sure post it for you to watch. Thank you to everyone that wished me well and to "break a leg"!

Finished another adorable baby hat! Thanks to my readers that suggested this pattern. The unique construction made it a lot of fun and just like the Cheery Scrap Hat, I finished it in two evenings. I hoping to get one or two more done before my segment on TV tomorrow morning!

FYI: If you are going to catch my local TV25 news tomorrow morning, I will be on with Great Lakes Bay Moms at 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

FO: Cheery Scrap Hat

Even though it's obvious this hat wasn't knit for LZ, I couldn't resist putting it on him to model. He never looked so cute in pink hearts!

Knit in two nights, this was a fun, quick and addicting hat to make.

Another great pattern designed by Kate Oates of Tot Toppers. And you won't believe this… it's a FREE pattern found HERE through Petite Purls.

Knitterella on TV

Recently I found out the I'm going to have the opportunity to be on TV! Yes, Knitterella on TV and I'm so excited (and nervous)! There is an awesome, local group in my area called Great Lakes Bay Moms. They are going on my local TV25 morning news next Monday the 17th and are going to talk about the importance of bundling up yourself and kids during these cold Michigan winter months. The Great Lakes Bay Moms were looking for a knitter that could share his/her insight on this subject and the knitter they found was me! Since bundling up with handknits is my favorite way to dress myself and my kids I was so on board! Along with featuring my own knitting patterns I also will be talking about all the resources found online for knitters/crocheters. I'm going to showcase samples of fun and stylish knitted/crocheted hats that are made from FREE patterns found online. I will be posting links to these patterns once the episode is aired so viewers can start casting on. Sounds like fun, don't you think?

Right now I'm trying to knit as much as I can. On the needles now, is a Cheery Scrap Hat from Tot Toppers - SO cute! What are your favorite FREE patterns for baby/child hats? I need to knit up as many samples as I can and FAST!

World Aids Day Fundraiser with Steven

Today is
World Aids Day. I know this because my friend, blogger and fellow Michigander, Steven, organizes his "Bitches Get Stitches World Aids Day Project". Last year he raised just under $5,000 in a very short time. This year his project has gotten larger with a huge sponsor list of donated PRIZES. 100% of the money raised will go directly to the Lansing Area Aids Network. Today, I'm honored to be a part of this great cause by donating a Knitterella prize package that includes a humor project bag filled with 2 sets of humor note cards and 2 sets of humor gift tags as well as my most recent pattern, Chevron Stripe.

Steven's sponsor list is a huge and exciting one. You can see the full list HERE. So fellow knitters, if you'd like a chance to win one of these great prizes all you have to do is follow "the how" instructions below. I hope you can join me today in supporting this great cause!

the how:

1. On December 1st, click this link to visit the lansing area aids network website and make a donation via paypal. The suggested minimum donation is $40, the cost of one rapid hiv test. however, I know $40 is a lot money for a lot of people (myself included). Since i don't want to discourage anyone from making a donation they can afford, all donations will be accepted, even if it's only $1.

 2. Shoot Steven an email at bgsworldaidsdayproject@gmail.com with your contact information and the amount you donated. The details of your personal information will be kept confidential. This is so he can keep track of the total as it grows, and so he can make sure you get your prize.

3. Winners will be chosen at random. It could be you!

The fine bold print: *Entries will only be accepted TODAY, on world aids day itself (Dec 1st)! This means 12:00am - 11:59pm is your 24 hour window to make a donation and send Steven an email to be entered to win some loot. Steven is in the Eastern Standard time zone, so his giveaway is too!

Lunch and A Yarn Shop

Two weekends ago (gosh, has it been that long already?) I meet up with some dear knitterly friends (Melynda, Erica, Carrie and a new friend Debs) for lunch and a little yarn shop hop in the Detroit area.

As always, it was a great time! Here are some pics from the day. Sorry for the blurriness, these were taken from my phone.

Hey, I thought my camera was supposed to take good pics???

Here's a photo of Melynda with Sam and Erica with Padraig. It was my first time meeting the boys and they couldn't have been more adorable. Decked out in handknits too of course!

It also was the first time the boys meet each other. They were so smiley and happy to finally meet :)

Of course there were knitted gifts too!

(Hey, nice gift tag!)

Carrie was in all the way from California! It was so nice to be able to visit with her in person.

After a delicious lunch at Pronto we headed across the way to a charming yarn shop called Ewe-nique Knits. I was very excited to find my Knitterella stationery featured in both Vogue Knitting Holiday and Interweave Holiday Knits. Below is a shot of me happily posing with the magazines. It's always a thrill to be featured!!

Don't forget the blurry group shot!

What a great day! I always feel rejuvenated after meeting with friends that share my knitting passion. Hopefully our next meet up will be sooner than later!

A Hat and A Book

This is my new favorite baby gift to give. A sweet and useful knitted hat packaged with a fun, children's knitting themed book. With so many cute and free knitting hat patterns (like THIS, THIS and THIS) and so many cute knitting themed children's books (like THIS, THIS and THIS) there are lots of options to make a fun gift. Of course you can't forget the perfect gift tag to top it off too  :)

These gifts were giving out last weekend when I got the chance to meet up with some dear knitty friends. I was so excited to finally meet two sweet little boys that I've been dying to hold. Although I wished I had time to knit both boys a new sweater set, the reality is a knitted hat and a nice book was way more my speed these days. Plus, I really loved this gift idea don't you?

P.S. I've got pics from my weekend luncheon and will post them soon.

Dax and A Winner

Both my boys have been sick for the past few days and today I'm thankful that we all woke up with no major fevers. I'll still spend most the day cuddling with them but I am able to get a bit of work done. One of the first things I wanted to do is draw a winner for the copy of the awesome book by Katya Frankel called Boys' Knits..

That winner is…

Nook! That said…
what a fantastic book! you're right, finding lots of classic, and stylish patterns for boys is a toughie! this is a great collection! and hurrah for an opportunity to win! xo

Congrats Nook! Email me at knitterella@knitterella.com and I'll get you your copy of the book.

Thank you to all that participated. If you didn't win you really should get yourself a copy. As you can see it's a great book! I bought yarn over the weekend and I will be casting on for Dax in the near future.

Don't forget this book is published by Cooperative Press and you can buy it HERE. You can also buy in on Ravelry HERE.

BLOG TOUR: Boys' Knits

Today I'm excited to post as part of a blog tour for a new and exciting book by Katya Frankel called Boys' Knits.

I did some graphic design work for Katya (aka the bingeknitter) a few years back and that is how I became familiar with her work. She is a very talented knitwear designer and when I heard she was designing a book dedicated to knits for boys I was really excited. And totally honored when she asked me to be a stop on her blog tour.

This book couldn't be more fitting for me. Being a mom of two boys I certainly know that modern, stylish knitting patterns for boys can be hard to come by. How refreshing it was to see that Katya solved this problem with her new book Boys' Knits. This wonderful book offers 16 very cool, modern and fun to knit sweaters for boys. We're talking sweaters for boys in the 4-14+ age range. How awesome is that?!

Not only is there a wide range of boy-friendly styles but guess what? They are all seamless designs that are worked from the bottom up. Gotta love that!

In this book you'll find stylish vests…

(pattern name: "Ryker")

Cozy sweaters…

(pattern name: "Rigel")

 Cool cardigans…

(pattern name: "Chip")

And even colorwork…

(pattern name: "Taradiddle")

I love them all but I think for me, I'll have to cast on for DAX first!

(pattern name: "Dax")

This awesome book is published by Cooperative Press and you can buy it HERE. You can also buy in on Ravelry HERE.

Lucky for us - or should I say one of us :) Katya was generous enough to offer a copy for a giveaway! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of the book. I'll draw a lucky winner next week and email you your own copy Boys' Knits.

FO: Declan's Hat

Big brother slept in just long enough for me to finish up the last few rounds on this new hat. Just in time too as Trick or Treating tonight is going to be a chilly one!

This pattern is called Declan's Hat and what a pleasant surprise it was. A quick, worsted weight knit with just enough interest to keep me going. The best part of all? It's a FREE one!

Happy Halloween!

Three Winners and a PIP

I could call this my WIP but I'm calling it my PIP because it's a "Pattern In Progress". Using scrumptious, Blue Sky Alpaca, Organic Cotton in a gorgeous shade called Orchid I'm casting on for a new design. This time I'm deigning a simple, yet interesting baby blanket. Designing a baby blanket and designing with Blue Sky Alpaca are both new to me and I'm very excited about it. This yarn is heavenly!
