Time To Make The Hats

Time to get out my favorite hat yarn because I've got more babies to knit for!

As you know, baby hats are my favorite gift to knit and give new babies but I'm wondering, what do I do when they are summer babies? Do I just knit 6 month and up sized hats so they have them for the fall and winter? Or would a baby need a hat in the summer? Maybe just like a cotton hat to protect their little heads from the sun? I suppose that would probably be useful right?

What is your favorite gift to make for summer babies? If you have any ideas to share or maybe a favorite gift that you got for your newborn or pattern I'd love to hear it!

Well I just got finished a little vest for a baby due in Aug, but it's 3-6mths size so he won't probably wear it until Nov, which is just as well as it's already very hot here in TX! I don't know what I would knit for a summer baby to be honest, little cotton jumpers for a girl would be cute, but for boys I don't have any ideas.
I always love your hats though, so I'd make a larger size so they can wear it come fall or winter :)

hmmm. i guess it depends on where they live, but i actually don't think a summer hat would be worn....in the summer. i would size it so that the baby could wear it come fall. and of course paired with one of those adorable blankets that the baby could use right away! :)

I love baby hats, too! I live in Georgia-so I have made the hats larger to be worn during colder months (and made them from cotton).
I have a baby gift to make & was thinking of trying my hand at a teddy bear--

I always knit baby hats for newborns and I ususally just size it for fall/winter. Where I live we have cold long winters so I figure they'll get a lot of use for it that way.

It depends where they live but I think it's better to make a bigger size for the following cool season ... that's what I do for baby gifts. Baby hats and little cotton knit washcloths with baby feet on them are my gifts for every baby I know.

I think Miss Dashwood (http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTmissdashwood.html), in cotton, is the perfect summer baby gift. Keeps those little faces protected from the sun!

i have to tell you my daughter anna, was born in June, and the week before she was born in was 90 the day I had her it was rainy and 45, so was the next, and the next. I was so glad she had a little hat to wear. i love the idea of a cotton hat for summer.

IT's better to knit bigger so the babies can wear it in the Winter. Hats for babies use to be one of my favorite projects to make and give. Now that I have a wee one of my own, I realize that babies don't really like wearing hats. But they look so cute in them. I forced it on her head anyways when it was Winter. She needed it cause she was bald. Now, I like to knit blankets, sweaters and booties.

Hey Jill. I haven't really knit anything for a summer baby, but I did make some pretty cute onesies for a friend who had a baby boy last summer. You can find a pic on my blog HERE

They were pretty easy and it was fun to pic out the fabrics.

I'm in the middle of knitting a cotton sunhat for my "baby." If you wanted to do a blanket, you could knit one with an eye towards it being laid on the ground for baby to lay on under a tree (a cone of sugar & cream makes a nice square for a non-moving baby).

Of course slightly bigger hats would be good for winter, too!

I would make something a bit larger for the fall/winter months. They will love whatever you put together. Very creative.

I knit tons of baby hats from Itty-Bitty too. I have done either a bigger size that will fit them in the fall/winter or a cotton hat that they can wear right away. (My friend took a parenting class that said that babies are supposed to wear hats for the first 6 months.)

Could you make a smaller version of Fun in the Sun by Interweave Crochet? Oh my God, that would be adorable!

your baby hats are always so adorable that i am sure you cannot go wrong no matter how you approach the "problem" of summer babies! i can't wait to see them!
