A Knitting Tragedy

Tragedy has struck my sock drawer. My first beloved pair of hand-knit socks, the first pair that I made for myself has seen its last day.

I've loved these socks so much and wore them so much that the inevitable has happened… a big blow out in the heel. I know what I have to do now but I think I'll have EZ do it because I just can't bear to toss them into the trash myself. *snif, snif*

I got my first hole in a sock a few months ago and I was really bummed about it. I went on youtube and darning a sock is REALLY easy and worth it if you love the sock enough. :)

Don't toss them--darn them! You can't throw away your very first pair!

No tossing away of that pair of historic socks. No, just get yourself some color of yarn in the right gauge, and do some tidy darning. It's not difficult, and you can add another cat's life to your creation.

Cheers!

My sympathies. I can understand as it just happened to the first two pairs I knitted and they are the ones I wear the most often. We know it will happen eventually, but it is still sad.

It's very sad... I can't imagine how I will feel when it will happen to me... I shall not wear my hand knitted socks too much ;-)

This is always really sad! You could frame them and use them for decorating your house instead!

Have you thought about repairing them? There are good instructions out there on darning socks. Just an idea. :)

I know it seems a bit silly but me and my hubby have had socks we love too much to part with and i have picked up stitches and patch the holes :) I just trim out the thin stuff pick up and knit to fill the hole :) but I am a bit crazy I think lol

Ohhh!!! The sorrow! I can only imagine, but every time I put on my first socks I...well, it will be a sad day indeed.

Don't throw them out! Just darn them. Here's a how-to with pics: http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/03/darn_it.html

I wouldn't stand throwing out handmade socks either. :(

I agree with everyone that says darn them.....I've done it. In fact go get all your socks that look a little light in the foot--like they are wearing out and darn those puppies too.

I should offer to help you out but goodness knows when I'll ever make it to another knit night.

Oh dear. You have my unending sympathies. I had this happen to my first finished pair not too long ago.

Make a little toy or something from the leg part! When mine start wearing out that's what I'm going to do....I can't bear the thought of throwing them away.
