That Was Fast!

A good friend asked me for a favor the other day. She said she was getting her 3 month old twins photos done and wondered if I had any baby hats in my stash. Of course I jumped all over this because she has the cutest babes and I was honored that she wanted to use something handknit by me.

I had a few hats in my stash but then we were flipping through Itty-Bitty Hats and had our hearts set on these.

I already made her these when they were first born (they'll look adorable in a shot with them together!) and then we thought this "Cotton Stria Stripes" would be sweet on her little boy and this "Rosebud" on her little girl.

I knit them in record time too - finished one a night. Boy was that fast! I'm sure they looked adorable in them. Can't wait to see the final photos!

On A Side Note: Often (and I'm sure it's the same for you) when I give these little creations, people say, "Oh, you should totally sell these!" and I totally would but (as I'm sure you know) you can't sell something that isn't your own design. Since the pattern was designed by someone else (Susan B. Anderson in this case) I can't do that due to copy-write issues. Being a Graphic Designer and a creative person I totally respect that too.

I mean, you can pay me to knit them - like commission me - but I can't say, knit a bunch of Susan B. Anderson's designs (or whoever's) and then put them up on Etsy or my own site or take them to a store or something like that.

Although, I have to say, every-time I hear this comment it makes me want to design some of my own patterns. I would just love that. This is a goal of mine and hopefully in 2008 I will!

The hats are fabulous! You could totally make something with the adorable flowers you created for the barrettes? You are so talented! And a good friend for getting these hats done so quickly!

I would agree with peaknits completely. You can totally design your own hats. Do it and sell them! :)

Jill, Bless your heart for writing about copyright issues. I have people, lots, writing me every week asking to knit my designs to sell and I have to say no, which isn't fun. It is a problem because a lot of people don't ask and I think most who are selling other's designs don't know that it isn't permissable to sell someone else's designs for profit. With the small knitted items, like in my books, I think you run into more of a problem with copyright because they are so quick to knit. It is always an interesting topic.
You are a wonderful knitter and those are some lucky babies!
Keep up the good work.

Hi Jill. I have a friend with some questions regarding copyright issues and selling sewn or screenprinted items. Do you have a good web site or book that discusses these types of issues that I could point her to, or can you get in touch with me for more specific questions? Thanks!

Those hats are so cute, but I'm sure you could totally design your own by now, as creative and talented as you are. Go for it!
